Where Schooling Has Come In The 21st Century

Education is changing by leaps and bounds. Not only are the curricula for old standby subjects different, but also new disciplines are being offered, and the way we actually learn is progressing. One of the biggest and most progressive changes is the advent of digital learning.

Aside from being able to complete a full degree online, young children are being primed in classes around the world. They have access to other children from different cultures, plus experts in certain fields such as nature and animals can speak to the class from far away.

SurgeryFurther, great advancements have been made in medical procedures due to the fact that operations can be conducted with help from surgeons connected to the operating room.

Again, these helper or trainer surgeons can be from anywhere in the world.

Lastly, research universities can teach medical personnel at other facilities and hospitals how to use equipment in various procedures. By watching through large screens, both the students and the teachers can see what is happening.

In fact, there is no end to the broad scope of digital learning today.

Needless to say, there are many advantages to learning online.

  • You might want to improve your skills in a specific field.
  • You might like to learn something new such as a trade or foreign language.
  • You might not have the resources to pay for tuition, but can find plenty of free courses to meet your needs.
  • You do not have access to transportation, and thus, an online course solves that problem nicely.
  • Your hours may be limited by having children or other family members to care for. Taking courses over the internet means you can work the times of the day when you are available.
  • Most colleges and universities, even prestigious institutes, offer at least a few classes online, if not whole degree or diploma programs.
  • And the list goes on…

Agreeably, there was a time when society would not have accepted a degree from an online source. It may have been seen as somewhat dodgy or hokey. And to be honest, some people still confuse diploma mills with real courses. But the good news is that employers are now looking favorably at all types of education.

EquationsIn fact, schools often do not distinguish between an on-site and online education. The reason for this is the requirements are equally stringent.

To satisfy a certificate, diploma, or degree program, students must complete the same course work and course load. There are no free rides because some of them have not studied at the physical building.

Additionally, as more Ivy League type institutes offer online educations, it makes it harder for bogus entities to exist. If society accepts that MIT, Yale and Harvard think it is okay to teach their students through digital medium, then why would anyone take a no-name “college” seriously?

By the mainstream colleges and universities participating in the new technology, the ante is upped for the whole industry. It acts as a checks and balances to keep things in order and to keep the standards higher.

Of course, should you decide to find an online class, school or program, it is important to complete your due diligence by researching the credentials of the college or university if you don’t know it by name. Databases exist to prove whether or not they are accredited and how they are approved by specific bodies. Obviously, before sending any money , it is wise to spend the time to search things out.

Likewise, if you need the courses for legitimate credits elsewhere, make sure those credits are transferable. Not only will you lose your tuition costs by having to pay again, but why waste the time commitment if it was for nothing? On the other hand, for potential students thinking about taking a free course to enhance their lives, then checking credentials won’t be as crucial.

Get ConnectedOnce you have decided upon an educational institute and begin your classes, although I have said the work load and requirements are the same, there are very real differences between online and on-site classes.

One of the biggest struggles for students is how to study effectively. In other words, what steps can you take to make the most out of your classes? Things are much different when you are by yourself in a room rather than surrounded by class mates and professors or instructors.

And while many people learn better being on their own, they still feel that sense of isolation and having no-one to communicate with. Schools understand this and want everyone to succeed. They have a reputation to uphold and need to prepare each student with the best possible tools to complete their programs.

Consequently, part of the curriculum will include office visits, albeit online, course discussions and participation through message software or forum platforms, plus extra tutorial help for those that need or want it. You really aren’t left to your own devices. But the key here, is that you take advantage of all that is on offer.

Further, you need to set your own parameters for your working schedule, where you will work, and how you will get this class done successfully. No doubt, you have to be strict with yourself to avoid procrastination, temptation, and isolation. Once you set yourself up with the right tools, it should be easier to fight the obstacles you will encounter along the way.

One other thing to keep in mind when choosing an online school and internet driven program. Don’t let the naysayers persuade you to abandon your plans. If you have family, friends or acquaintances that think this is a “stupid” idea, just remind yourself that you are improving your lot in life. Take a look at all the wonderful schools and classes that are available. Read about online education and understand the real facts. In short, just do it and block out the negative vibes.

I feel good! After I completed my program, I felt rejuvenated. I was empowered because I finished an actual goal. And I knew in my heart that no-one could take that away from me.

Whether I worked in my field until retirement or I chose something else, I could say that I had that piece of paper that was all mine.

And when others say education is not that important in today’s age, that there are lots of examples of successful people that dropped out of school, that may be true, but for me this was more than just getting a job, this was about achievement.

I set a plan in action to compete a goal. I found a program, I enrolled, I took the courses, I excelled, and I graduated. And to me that says something about a person’s character.

Good Luck with whatever path you choose!
